For week 19 of the Indie Travel Challenge, we’d like you to design the perfect road trip…Who’s with you in the car?…What kind of car are you driving? What snacks are in the cooler? What music is playing? And, most importantly, where are you?
I am actually planning on doing a giant USA road trip whenever I can get my Colombian boyfriend into the country. Since he has never been to the USA; and I have travelled a good deal of it for years as a roadie; I really want to do a road trip that would take us to all 48 continental states. He wants to see one of the longest bridges; a bridge in Louisiana, that I didn’t even know existed. I want to travel the whole length of Route 66 from beginning to end continuously and also go to Kansas to see the BIGGEST BALL OF TWINE. We both just want to travel around and see all the ridiculous and awesome side road attractions and places across the USA.
As Diego puts it;
“People in the USA have so much free time to create useless things”.
And it’s true. And it’s awesome.
I would LOVE to travel the USA by El Camino.
I love El Camino’s. Part muscle car from the 70’s; part truck. What could be more awesome? (especially for the Route 66 part of the journey). But realistically, we will probably do it in some kind old Honda or Acura stick shift; since that’s what I usually own because they are great on gas and I hate driving automatic transmissions.
On the radio will be a wild assortment of musical stylin’s, depending on mood and level of silliness. And maybe some impromptu drum beats and song interludes by Diego. He does that.
We would be travelling across the country, jammin’ out to everything from old swing music, to bad 90’s hip-hop, to straight up metal and Muse; and there will probably some stupid, sucky Limp Bizkit – cause Diego loves it – but maybe that music will ‘accidently’ get erased off the Mp3 player. Just saying. Mistakes happen.
And we will be munching on genoa salami and the million different kinds of cheese we have in the USA that doesn’t exist in Colombia, with tomatoes and cucumber slices on pita bread, peanut butter and fluff sandwiches, LOTS of Mountain Dew, grapes,and hot cocoa. Oh, and Campbell’s chicken soup from the can, because it is awesome and delicious! I’ll make some chocolate chip cookies and some nutritional yeasty crackers (another food from my childhood that is delicious) to bring too.
Its going to be a wild assortment of ‘new-to-the-Colombian’ foods.
It will range from super-healthy to horribly-unhealthy-yet-probably-still-healthier-than-the-Paisa-diet. And of course there will be many, many picnics that include fruits and veggies bought at side-of-the-road farmer’s stands.
Yup, I’m already planning an awesome; albeit expensive, round the USA trip to show off my country to Diego. I’ve been in his for a few months (ok, 6) and I really want him to come see mine!
This is part of Boots n All 2012 Indie Travel Challenge. I’m doing this in hopes of becoming a more consistent and better travel-blogger. And maybe if Barrett Jackson would want to lend/donate an El Camino or some other awesome car for this trip in exchange for lots of photos, posts, and promotions about them….just saying.
I am a freelance travel and music photographer and creator of GoingNomadic.com. I love music, food, and exploring cities without guidebooks. I've flown a helicopter, hitchhiked down the east coast USA, and once snuck into the back of a zoo (in Serbia) and pet a lion. I am always up for an adventure, and sometimes I videotape them.
