Fishermen of Juan Griego, Venezuela–Photo Essay

by in Food Porn, Going Nomadic, South America

Juan Griego is a tiny little fisherman town on Margarita Island in the Caribbean coast of Venezuela.   Each early morning, on the beach is the fisherman market, where you can buy freshly caught fish and watch the fishermen at work.   I loved these guys.   They are super-friendly and loved me running around photographing them.

(Pulling in the nets without knotting them is another task that takes quite a bit of training.  These guys had this whole net off the boat and set for the next morning in a matter of minutes)

(The fisherman here are amazingly friendly.  This is the guy that introduced me to all the fisherman, and started the “GRINGA” nickname I’ve come to love down here.)

I loved Juan Griego and the fishermen there.  If you get a chance to go to Margarita Island, I highly recommend visiting the morning fish market on Juan Griego.
